Comic Book
During 1st quarter we were learning about the American Revolution, and what it was like from different perspectives. The different perspectives were the Loyalists (people loyal and committed to the British), the Patriots (people who rebelled, and wanted to disconnect from the British government), women of the time, and the African Americans. We learned about the different perspectives and events of the time, so we could choose what perspective we wanted to make a Comic for. We made our story revolve around the life of a slave at the time. The 4 events we decided to have in our Comic were the Boston Massacre, Lord Dunmore’s Proclamation, Battle of Yorktown, and the Constitution. We also, used historical figures as characters in our comic such as, John Adams (a lawyer who defended the British soldiers when on trial. He was a big part in the American Revolution, and became the second President.) Crispus Attucks (the first known black man to die as a result of the American Revolution, and the first to die in the Boston Massacre, and Sir Guy Carlton (Commander of British forces, who helped free African slaves.)
During the time of the project I was really busy, I had soccer, big science and language arts projects, work from other classes, and other things too. This was a lot at one time, and I needed to make sure I did my part in the project because not only my grade, but my partner’s grade also depended on the quality of the work that I did. I knew I needed to finish everything on time, so my partner could use the images to make the text and dialogue of the story. I tried to finish all 20 images in one night. It really didn’t work out the way that I thought it would. I had to come up with images that fit the story, so I had to first think about what my images were going to be for the story. That took about 20 minutes. Then when I started I needed to make the characters, and try and make a bit of a story line for all the images. I wasn’t able to finish all 20 images that night. I was able to make 10, and that took me about an hour, since I wanted to have well-crafted images. I knew trying to make 20 images in one day with limited time wouldn’t help and trying to do all of that just made me stressed. That wasn’t a good use of time management, so I needed to come up with a system.
Evidence of my attempt to improve on managing my time is in my agenda. This shows what my plans were, and what I needed to do that night to be ready for the next day. When I would complete something I would cross it off and move on to the next thing on my list, until everything was crossed off and complete. This helped me see what I finished and work that I still needed to do. Another piece of evidence that shows what I worked on and my work ethic is the 10 images I drew each night. The drawings and quality of them are a result of me managing my time better. I numbered each drawing, to make sure I drew the right amount each night.
Drawing all of the images, scanning them in, and cropping and editing them to fit in the comic took a lot of time. So I realized it was important I came up with a way to manage my time. It still wasn’t easy, but when I came up with a system on how I would work on my project it was a lot more effective. Rather than stressing myself, and trying to do my work with no plan on how I am going to complete my work in the time I had. I think my experience in this project, has made better with managing my time. I believe I can still grow in this, and there is always room for improvement.
