Comprehension Skills

Science

This year in science I became better comprehension. This happened over the course of several science classes. We go in, do a daily prep and then we learn about a science topic within a unit. Sometimes we have readings as homework with a quiz the next day. We do all this to gain an understanding of scientific laws, principles and just general things we need to know for the future. The products of this work are several projects we did to show our understanding. There are also quizzes to show that we comprehended the reading.

An artifact to show the growth of critical thinking and comprehension is the test over our Physical Science unit. I got a 38.5 out of 44. This shows growth because the previous unit test I got a low grade on. I learned things like energy there are 8 types of energy. They are split into two groups of kinetic and potential energy. For something to have KE it has to be moving. This is why things like sound energy, thermal energy, electrical energy and light energy are under kinetic energy because they all involve movement of molecules. Gravitational energy, elastic energy and chemical energy are potential because they have the potential to move. I used all of this knowledge to get a good grade on my unit test which helped me practice comprehension skills.

Another artifact is reading 1.2. At my school we do readings by a system called RAHA. We read the passage, annotate parts to make connections, highlight important parts and answer the questions. I did all of this in this reading. This helps us understand things we read. In this particular reading I learned about clouds. There are 4 main types of clouds. Cumulous clouds are the puffy white ones. Stratus clouds are flat and hazy. Sometimes they form fog. High wispy clouds are called cirrus clouds and cumulonimbus clouds are the big grey clouds that bring storms. I learned all of this through comprehension of this reading thus improving my comprehension skills.
